A Central America Cruise Adventure Begins

This adventure along the Central America cruise route from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Panama City, Panama, was nothing short of fantastic. It was also our very first time sailing with another couple—dear friends we consider family, who also live in Panama, just like we do. We scored a deal we simply couldn’t pass up, and by the end of this voyage, we were already craving more cruises and slow-travel adventures. After this experience, we were completely sold—so much so that I’m almost embarrassed to admit how many cruises we now have booked for 2026. But I digress.

Sailing with Friends Who Feel Like Family

Wayne and I met our sailing companions in Fort Lauderdale, where we spent time visiting friends and handling a bit of U.S. business before boarding our Viking ship. Sharing this journey with close friends added an entirely new layer of joy, making the adventure feel even more meaningful from the very start.

Our Stay at the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort

While in Fort Lauderdale, Wayne and I stayed about five nights at the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort. The location was unbeatable—directly across the street from the beach and centrally situated for getting around the city. Although the room itself was definitely showing its age, the service more than made up for it. The hotel staff and restaurant team were truly impeccable, and their warmth and professionalism left a lasting impression.

Boarding Our Viking Ship

When it was finally time to board our Viking ship, we were as excited as kids in a candy store. Check-in was smooth and efficient, immediately reminding us why Viking remains our favorite cruise line. While Viking doesn’t offer casinos or flashy attractions, it provides something far more valuable to us—elegant, adults-only cruising with thoughtful, personalized service that doesn’t nickel-and-dime you at every turn.

First Impressions of Viking Mars

Built in 2022, Viking Mars is a modern, small-ship luxury liner designed to carry fewer than 1,000 guests, creating an atmosphere that feels intimate, refined, and never crowded. From the all-veranda staterooms and Scandinavian-inspired interiors to the Nordic Spa complete with a snow grotto and thermal suite, the ship truly impressed us. Add in specialty dining, an infinity pool, and stunning lounges perfect for ocean viewing, and Viking Mars easily checks every box for our travel style.

Settling In Onboard

Once onboard, Wayne and I headed straight to the café for lunch while we waited for our friends to join us. When they arrived, Wayne happily stepped into the role of unofficial tour guide—it was their first time sailing with Viking, though not their first cruise. After exploring the ship together, we settled in, chatting and soaking in the beautiful water views until we heard the announcement that our staterooms were ready. That gave us just enough time to unpack, get comfortable, and continue enjoying the day.
