Punta Arenas, Chile: A Cold Walk, A Lesson Learned
Wayne and I explored Punta Arenas, Chile, on our own and discovered that sometimes the biggest travel lessons come from the simplest adventures. From a long, windy walk to local markets and an unexpected transportation tip, this port stop reminded us that every destination has a story—even if it's not one we'd rush back to experience again.

🚢 This Time… We Got Off the Ship
On December 22, 2025, we ported in Punta Arenas, Chile—and this time, we absolutely got off the ship. While we still weren’t interested in booking an excursion, we decided to do a little self-guided exploring around the port. Sometimes those are the best kinds of days… or so we thought. What we didn’t realize was just how far everything was from the ship.
🚶♀️ The Walk We Didn’t Expect
Before we knew it, we found ourselves walking quite a distance toward a large fin of a whale and a yellow building that we had been told housed local vendors.
And let’s just say… it was quite the journey.
It was extremely cold and very windy, and by the time we reached the building, we were definitely feeling it. Still, we pressed on, hoping to discover something special once we arrived.
🏬 The “Yellow Building” Experience
The building itself felt more like a warehouse than a marketplace—simple, functional, and not particularly inviting. Inside, local vendors were selling handmade goods, which we always love to support. However, we couldn’t help but notice that many of the prices felt geared toward tourists—what some might call “Gringo pricing.”
Even with that in mind, we were open to purchasing something to support the community, but the prices were simply beyond what we found reasonable. So, we browsed, took it all in, warmed up a bit… and decided it was time to head back.
🥶 Cold, Windy, and Ready to Go
As we stepped back outside, the cold and wind quickly reminded us that our visit would be short. We snapped a few photos, but not many—sometimes the weather makes that decision for you. That’s when we made a discovery we hoped to have known earlier…
🚐 A Helpful Travel Tip
Instead of walking all the way back, we took one of the local minivans back to the ship. And here’s the lesson:
👉 Always check to see if transportation is available from the port—especially in extreme weather. Whether it’s cold, hot, or simply a long distance, that small step can make a big difference in your experience. We definitely would have appreciated knowing that before our long walk.
🤔 Our Honest Take on Punta Arenas
Punta Arenas, for us, was… simple. We can’t say we were disappointed, because we didn’t have strong expectations going in. It was more about exploration and seeing what we might discover. And while we did explore the port area, it’s fair to say—we don’t feel the need to return to this particular stop. That said, we’re always open to learning more.
👉 If you’ve been to Punta Arenas and had a different experience, we’d love to hear your recommendations!
