🎉 From an Incredible Day to a Memorable Night
As our ship remained docked in Montevideo, Uruguay, Wayne and I returned to our Viking ship to freshen up and prepare for our New Year's Eve dinner. Truthfully, we had already experienced such an incredible afternoon exploring Montevideo that if we had simply taken a long nap and awakened just in time for dinner, it would have been a perfect day. But Viking had something even more special in store.
As we entered the dining room, the crew greeted us with festive New Year's headwear—a handsome party hat for Wayne and a sparkling tiara for me. It was such an unexpected gesture that immediately put smiles on our faces and made the evening feel even more memorable. It was the perfect way to begin saying goodbye to 2025 and welcoming 2026.
🍽️ A Wonderful Final Dinner of the Year
Dinner was, as always, beautifully prepared. While it didn't quite top the incredible steak we had enjoyed earlier that day, every bite was delicious. As we looked around the ship, we noticed another transformation. Only days earlier, Christmas decorations filled every corner. Now the holiday décor had seamlessly shifted to New Year's celebrations, giving the ship an entirely new atmosphere.
One thing we always appreciate about Viking is its understated elegance. While Viking doesn't offer professional photo stations like many larger cruise lines, they thoughtfully created beautiful holiday backdrops throughout the ship where guests could capture their own memories. Of course, Wayne and I couldn't resist taking a few photos before continuing our evening adventures.
🎶 Three New Year's Parties—One Impossible Decision
After dinner—and yes, another quick nap—we set out to experience every New Year's celebration happening aboard the ship. Each venue had its own unique personality.
❄️ Pool Deck Celebration
The liveliest party was by the pool, where a magnificent ice sculpture carved with "2025" stood as the centerpiece. Music filled the air with live performances, dancing and laughter echoed across the deck, and this quickly became the gathering place for most of the passengers.
🎻 Classical Celebration
Another deck hosted a more elegant and subdued celebration featuring classical music—perfect for those who preferred a quieter evening.
🎸 Explorer's Lounge
Then there was the Explorer's Lounge, where the guitarist kept the atmosphere lively while guests gathered around the bar, sharing stories, drinks, and laughter.
Wayne and I felt like children in a candy store. There wasn't just one celebration. There were three. And somehow, we managed to enjoy all of them.
❤️ The Friends We Never Expected
One of the greatest surprises of this voyage wasn't the destinations. It was the people. Although we boarded this cruise without traveling alongside friends, we left with many.
Throughout the voyage, we shared conversations, meals, sunsets, and countless laughs. Some new friends even invited us to tour their beautiful Owner's Suites, where we gathered for a sunset champagne toast just before the New Year’s parties.
Moments like these remind us that travel isn't only about seeing new places. Sometimes it's about meeting people who make those places even more memorable.
⏰ The Final Countdown
As midnight approached, everyone gradually found the place where they wanted to welcome the New Year. Wayne and I stood side by side. Around us, hundreds of smiling faces held glasses of champagne.
Then together we counted...
10... 9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...
🎆 Happy New Year!
2026 had officially arrived.
Wayne and I shared a kiss.
Glasses clinked all around us.
The 2025 ice sculpture was broken and knocked in the pool.
Then, together with guests from around the world, we sang the timeless New Year's classic...
"Auld Lang Syne."
It was one of those beautiful travel moments that simply stays with you forever.
🎇 Fireworks Over Montevideo
As soon as midnight struck, fireworks erupted across the Montevideo skyline. Guests hurried outside onto the decks to watch. What unfolded before us was unlike any fireworks display we had ever experienced. The people of Uruguay absolutely lit up the night sky.
Brilliant colors reflected across the harbor while explosions echoed throughout the city. Standing aboard our Viking ship, surrounded by new friends, champagne in hand, we couldn't have imagined a more spectacular way to welcome a new year.
Words simply cannot capture what that moment felt like.
💙 A Bittersweet Beginning
As joyful as the celebration was, there was also a quiet sense of reflection. For Wayne and me, welcoming 2026 was bittersweet. During 2025, we each lost two brothers. As the fireworks filled the sky, we couldn't help but think about the loved ones who would not be walking beside us into this new year. But there was also hope.
Hope for new adventures.
Hope for new opportunities.
Hope that God had wonderful things ahead.
Standing together beneath the fireworks over Montevideo, we felt both the weight of our losses and the excitement of all that lay before us. Sometimes life holds grief and gratitude in the very same moment. This was one of those moments.
