The Waitress Told Me to Put My Camera Down... So I Did
When our waitress smiled and said, "Save your camera for the main attraction," I had no idea what was coming. Moments later, a chef rolled a Tomahawk steak to our table and transformed dinner into a performance we'll never forget. Buenos Aires surprised us at every turn, from its incredible cuisine to an unexpected tango beside the river.

🏨 A Perfect Post-Cruise Escape
After a wonderful Viking cruise, Wayne and I spent two relaxing nights in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as part of Viking's post-cruise extension. It was the perfect way to wind down after an incredible voyage. Unfortunately, I came off the ship feeling a little under the weather, so our first day became one of much-needed rest and relaxation. Thankfully, we were staying at the Hilton Buenos Aires, where we even received a complimentary room upgrade valued at about $90. It was a wonderful surprise and made our stay even more comfortable. Of course, while I could rest...we still had to eat!
🥟 The Best Empanadas We've Ever Had
Our first meal was simple. Wayne and I ordered traditional Argentine empanadas with steak fries. We found ourselves enjoying what we both agreed were the best empanadas we've ever tasted. As much as we enjoy Panama's empanadas, these took the crown. The flaky pastry, flavorful filling, and perfectly cooked fries made for a meal we'll be talking about for years.
Sometimes the simplest meals become the most memorable.
🔥 A Dining Experience We'll Never Forget
Later, we asked the hotel concierge where we could enjoy an authentic Argentine steak dinner. His recommendation turned out to be one of the greatest dining experiences we've ever had.
Before our entrées even arrived, a beautiful cheese board cart was wheeled to our table, overflowing with artisan cheeses, fresh breads, grapes, nuts, and perfectly paired wines. Every bite was absolutely delicious. Then our waitress smiled and gave me some advice.
"Save your camera for the main attraction."
Naturally, my curiosity was piqued. A few minutes later, a server rolled a special cart to our table with a massive Tomahawk steak hanging from a hook. The chef carefully brushed it with oils before dramatically flame-broiling it right beside us. It wasn't just dinner—it was theater. Wayne and I sat there completely mesmerized. The presentation alone deserved a standing ovation.
And then we tasted it.
Oh...my...goodness.
It was one of the finest steaks either of us has ever eaten.
🥩 Argentina vs. Uruguay... Who Wins?
Many of you know we had already experienced the famous steaks of Uruguay, so naturally the comparison had to be made.
Our verdict?
It's a tie.
Both countries delivered extraordinary steaks that were cooked to perfection and full of incredible flavor. If you're a steak lover, you simply cannot go wrong in either destination.
💃 An Unexpected Tango Performance
One of our favorite memories happened completely by chance. While walking along the waterfront, Wayne noticed a couple preparing to dance the Argentine tango. He quickly grabbed his camera as the music began. Their performance was elegant, passionate, and absolutely captivating.
There was no grand theater. No elaborate stage. Just two talented dancers sharing their art along the riverfront for anyone willing to stop and watch.
It reminded us that sometimes the most authentic travel experiences are the ones you never planned. Watching them dance made us both say the same thing:
Next time we're in Buenos Aires, we're booking a full tango show.
❤️ A City Worth Returning To
Although our stay in Buenos Aires was brief, it left a lasting impression on us.
From the warm hospitality...
to unforgettable meals...
to world-class steak...
to beautiful tango...
Buenos Aires gave us every reason to come back. Sometimes two days are enough to introduce you to a city. But they're rarely enough to truly know it.
We left promising ourselves that one day we'd return and explore Buenos Aires the way it deserves to be explored.
💬 We'd Love to Hear From You!
