🌎 Arriving at the End of the World

On December 23, 2025, we ported in Ushuaia. There are few places on earth that feel as adventurous as Ushuaia. Known as the “End of the World,” this city sits between the snow-capped Andes Mountains and the icy waters of the Beagle Channel, creating one of the most breathtaking landscapes we’ve ever experienced. Ushuaia is more than just a gateway to Antarctica — it’s a destination filled with rugged beauty, fascinating history, incredible wildlife, and cuisine.

From late summer sunsets that stretch well into the evening to fresh Fuegian king crab served straight from the channel, every moment feels connected to nature and exploration. Whether you’re sailing through Patagonia, boarding a cruise, or simply enjoying the mountain views from the waterfront, Ushuaia offers a unique sense of wonder that truly lives up to its nickname: the end of the world, and the beginning of adventure.

❤️ One of Our Favorite Ports

This would end up being one of our favorite ports of the entire excursion. Not only because we discovered the most delicious king crab, but because despite the cold weather, the sun was shining and the city was incredibly easy to walk. Even if you did not have a plan for the day, simply strolling around the area was relaxing and enjoyable.

The shops and restaurants were conveniently located throughout town, making it easy to explore at your own pace. In fact, Wayne and I purchased a few T-shirts and magnets just before spotting a huge water tank filled with giant king crabs. You truly could not miss them.

🦀 The King Crab That Called Our Names

And once we saw them… we could not unsee them.

The king crabs practically called our names into the restaurant, and so in we went. Wayne and I ended up sharing one enormous king crab between the two of us. Before lunch, we even had the opportunity to select the crab ourselves. I felt a little bad for the crab… but very happy for us. The king crab was absolutely delicious.

Our waitress, Carol, kindly showed us how to crack the shell and remove the meat. Along with the crab, we enjoyed bread, butter, and potatoes — simple sides that allowed the fresh seafood to shine. We also loved knowing we were supporting a locally owned family business called Tia Elvira. It turned out to be the perfect lunch before making our way back to the ship.

🚢 King Crab Round Two

Ironically, by the time we returned on board, Viking was serving king crab on the dinner menu for all guests that evening. Although the onboard experience was still very good, we both agreed that nothing compared to enjoying fresh king crab right there in Ushuaia at Tia Elvira. Sometimes it is not just about the food — it is about the experience, the place, and the memory attached to it.

🚶‍♀️ Easy Walking, Beautiful Views, and Relaxed Exploring

One thing we especially appreciated about Ushuaia was how approachable and relaxed it felt. Some cruise ports can feel crowded or overwhelming, but Ushuaia invites you to slow down, breathe in the mountain air, and simply enjoy the surroundings. Between the waterfront views, the local shops, and the walkable streets, it became one of those ports where wandering around without a strict plan was part of the magic.

🌊 Next Stop: Cape Horn & The Drake Passage

Next up would be our scenic sailing around Cape Horn.

Many travelers wonder whether the seas are truly as rough as people proclaim around Cape Horn and the Drake Passage. Come back and join us as we share what it was really like — and learn more about the legendary Order of the Drake Passage.
