There are some travel experiences you can plan for, and then there are those moments that simply happen. Our New Year's Eve stop in Montevideo, Uruguay, was one of those surprises.
💦 Walking Straight into Carnival
The moment we stepped off our Viking ship, we knew this wasn't going to be an ordinary port day. The sounds of lively music echoed through the streets, delicious aromas drifted through the air, and everywhere we looked, people were celebrating. Then we realized something else...
We had walked right into one giant water fight!
People of all ages were laughing as they sprayed water guns, tossed buckets of water, and splashed one another from every direction. Wayne and I quickly realized that if we weren't paying attention, we'd be the next unsuspecting targets. We laughed as we carefully navigated our way through what felt like the world's happiest ambush.
☀️ Surviving the Summer Heat
If the water fights weren't enough of a clue, the weather certainly explained why everyone was trying to cool off. The day was incredibly hot. It honestly felt like we were walking through 120-degree heat, with the sun beating down from every direction. Finding shade became a mission in itself. Fortunately, we spotted a souvenir shop just in time. We ducked inside, escaped both the blazing sun and the flying water for a few minutes, browsed the local gifts, and cooled off just enough to continue our adventure.
🥩 Following the Smell to Mercado del Puerto
Eventually, we made our way toward Mercado del Puerto, Montevideo's famous market. Long before we reached it, we could smell the incredible aroma of meat cooking over open flames. Every grill seemed to have steaks, sausages, and other local specialties sizzling away. The smoky scent filled the entire area, making it nearly impossible to choose a restaurant.
Everything looked amazing. After wandering around for a bit, a friendly gentleman standing near a staircase pointed us upstairs and encouraged us to try one of the restaurants. We happily accepted his suggestion.
🍽️ The Best Steak We've Ever Had
We found a table overlooking the bustling market below, ordered steak, fries, and cold drinks, and settled in despite the lingering heat. The temperature was still overwhelming. But then our meal arrived.
To this day, Wayne and I both agree it was the best steak we've ever eaten. Perfectly cooked, flavorful, and incredibly tender—it was worth every minute spent in the summer heat. As we finished lunch, we looked at one another and said something we've repeated many times since:
"We have to come back to Uruguay someday."
🎶 Music That Stopped Us in Our Tracks
As we headed back toward the ship, we thought our afternoon adventure was winding down. We couldn't have been more wrong. Just outside the market, a live band had begun performing. The plaza transformed into one enormous celebration filled with singing, dancing, smiling faces, and contagious energy.
Some people jumped right into the dancing. Others—like us—stood off to the side filming videos, snapping photos, and happily bobbing our heads to the music while soaking in the atmosphere. It was one of those authentic travel moments you simply can't schedule or buy. It found us.
🥂 Ringing in the New Year
The excitement of Carnival, incredible food, live music, and the joyful spirit of Montevideo made this one of our favorite cruise ports. Little did we know, our celebration wasn't over.
That evening we would return to our Viking ship and experience a New Year's Eve celebration unlike anything we had anticipated. It would become another indelible chapter in our travels and one we'll share in our next post.
Looking back, Montevideo gave us far more than a port stop. It gave us laughter, incredible food, unexpected adventures, and memories that still make us smile whenever we think about them.
