When Staying Onboard Is the Best Choice: Our Day in Puerto Montt
Not every port needs to be explored. Here’s how staying on board turned into one of our most relaxing and enjoyable days of the journey.

🫣 Our First Port… and We Stayed Put
Our first port of call was Puerto Montt—and we didn’t get off the ship 🫣.
The day before, we had heard all about the excursions and different opportunities available. But truthfully, none of them really spoke to us. And instead of forcing an experience just to say we did it, we made a different choice.
We stayed on board.
And you know what? It was absolutely the right decision for us.
☀️ A Day of Rest, Sunshine, and Simple Joys
Instead of rushing off the ship, we took full advantage of everything around us. We spent time on the top deck, soaking up the sun, relaxing, and taking a few more photos. It felt unhurried, peaceful, and exactly what we needed.
We had enjoyed such a full and fun day at sea the day before that we didn’t feel like we were missing anything. In fact, it reminded us that travel doesn’t always mean doing more—it sometimes means choosing less. And we still had so much more of the journey ahead.
☕ A Full and Fun Day at Sea
The day before had been one to remember. We started with breakfast, then joined a Coffee Chat where we learned more about the ship’s activities and even discussed the marine life we might see along the way. It’s always nice to feel a bit more connected to the journey.
After that, I treated myself to some time at the spa. It was nice… but if I’m being honest, not a must-do. One of those experiences I could have skipped without missing much.
🍷💃 Wine, Dancing, and a Fun Surprise
By 2:00 pm, things picked up with our first wine tasting—New World Wines—and it was fantastic, as always. But the real surprise came right after.
Wayne had something planned… and next thing I knew, we were heading to the 3:30 pm Cha Cha dance class 💃 It was so much fun!
We even recorded each other dancing, and I’m still trying to convince Wayne to post the video on Facebook so everyone can decide—who did the Cha Cha best? Maybe one of you can help me convince him 😊
🎶 Evenings Filled with Music and Moments
Every evening brought something new. Sometimes it was a show. Other times, it was simply enjoying a drink while listening to a guitarist or violinist. The variety of entertainment onboard was impressive—there truly was something for everyone. Those after-dinner moments became something we looked forward to each night. It was the perfect way to wind down and take it all in.
💭 Have You Ever Skipped a Port?
Have you ever decided to stay on the ship rather than explore a port?
What made you choose that?
Sometimes the best travel decisions aren’t about where you go—but how you feel while you’re there.
🌎 Next Stop: Punta Arenas
Next up: Punta Arenas.
This will be the port where we picked up a very helpful tip—one you won’t want to miss, especially if you’re ever sailing this route on Viking.
Stay tuned… this journey keeps getting better.
